Vietnam Records More Than One Meter of Rainfall in 24 Hours

Central Vietnam recorded more than a meter of rainfall within 24 hours, the Ministry of Environment announced on Tuesday, surpassing the previous national record set in 1999.
From 7:00 p.m. Sunday to 7:00 p.m. Monday (12:00 GMT), three observation stations in Hue measured 1.7 meters, 1.1 meters, and just over one meter of rain, according to a statement from the ministry.
The previous record—99 centimeters—was also set in this country, home to a group of UNESCO World Heritage monuments.
Torrential rains have been battering the central region since last weekend, leading in particular to the closure of schools.
More than 8,600 people in four regions have been evacuated since Saturday due to the risk of severe flooding and landslides, the ministry added.
