US Imposes Sanctions on Hungarian Official Antal Rogan Over Corruption

The US government imposed sanctions on Antal Rogan, a senior Hungarian official, on Tuesday, accusing him of being involved in systemic corruption.
Rogan, a key member of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government and head of the Cabinet Office, allegedly orchestrated schemes to misappropriate public resources for personal enrichment and to benefit his political allies.
The US Treasury Department stated that Rogan abused his position to control crucial government entities and sectors of the Hungarian economy, directing resources to loyalists within the ruling Fidesz party.
The sanctions freeze all US-based assets linked to Rogan and ban American individuals or entities from engaging in transactions involving him.
Bradley T. Smith, the acting US Treasury under-secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, emphasized that corruption undermines good governance and economic growth.
He reiterated that the US would hold accountable those who exploit public office for personal gain at the country’s expense.
