US Commerce Secretary: Canada Becoming 51st State Is ‘Best Path’ to Economic Integration

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States as the “best way” to integrate the two nations’ economies. Speaking on Fox Business Network’s Varney & Co., Lutnick reiterated that President Donald Trump has long supported the idea of closer economic ties, even suggesting full political integration as a solution. “If they want to merge it, that’s how you make it the 51st state,” he said, emphasizing that Canada must cooperate with Washington to strengthen economic ties.
Lutnick’s remarks reflect Trump’s past statements advocating for Canada’s incorporation into the US. Before assuming office, Trump had frequently argued that Canadians were eager to join the US and had even referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor” rather than a head of state. These comments have drawn criticism in Canada, where sovereignty is a key issue, but also resonate with certain groups advocating for deeper economic cooperation.
The proposal raises questions about US-Canada relations and potential political ramifications. While economic integration remains a major discussion point between the two allies, formal statehood is highly unlikely due to legal and political complexities. Canada has yet to issue an official response to Lutnick’s comments, but the suggestion is expected to spark debate on both sides of the border.
