US Approves $39 Million Sale of AGM-158B Missiles to Japan

The US government has approved the sale of 16 AGM-158B/B-2 joint air-to-surface standoff missiles with extended range to Japan, valued at $39 million. This agreement, announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Wednesday, includes additional equipment such as dummy air training missiles, anti-jam GPS receivers, containers, spare parts, and technical support.

The missiles will be integrated into Japan’s F-15 fighter jets and potentially other aircraft used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The sale is intended to enhance Japan’s defense capabilities, supporting both US foreign policy and national security goals by strengthening the security of a key ally in the Indo-Pacific region. The transaction aims to improve Japan’s ability to counter present and future threats with advanced long-range strike capabilities.

Japan, a long-standing US ally in the Asia-Pacific region since World War II, has been bolstering its defense amid growing regional challenges, including China’s increasing influence. The country also hosts US military personnel, bases, and weaponry.
