Update: Death toll in Nepal floods amounts to 126

KATHMANDU – At least 126 people have died and 63 are missing in Nepal due to flooding and landslides hitting the country, particularly in the capital, Kathmandu, according to an updated toll announced on Sunday.

Large parts of eastern and central Nepal have been inundated since Friday, including entire neighbourhoods in Kathmandu. Rivers experienced sudden flooding, resulting in significant damage and loss of life.

Nepal’s national disaster risk reduction authority has increased the death toll to 126, with 63 missing, up from a previous count of 101 dead and 64 missing by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Over 3,000 personnel are involved in rescue operations using helicopters or inflatable boats. “More than 3,000 people have been rescued across the country,” added Interior Ministry spokesperson Rishi Ram Tiwari.

The Kathmandu Valley recorded 240 millimetres of rain within 24 hours from Friday to Saturday morning, according to the Nepal Meteorological Department. This marks the highest rainfall recorded in the Nepalese capital since at least 1970.
