UNSC: Attaf Calls for Stronger Arab-UN Partnership to Advance Regional Peace

Ahmed Attaf, Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, called on Thursday during a United Nations Security Council meeting chaired by Algeria for a partnership that enhances diplomatic efforts between the Arab nations and the UN to promote peace and security in the Arab region.

Appointed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Attaf led a discussion centered on “Cooperation between the Security Council and the Arab League.” He remarked that in light of the rapid and significant changes taking place in the Arab world, “we require, now more than ever, a partnership that elevates Arab and UN diplomatic actions aimed at fostering peace, security, and prosperity in the region—one in which our efforts align and our approaches are strengthened.”

He further elaborated that the partnership “we envision must reaffirm that the key to restoring security and stability in the Middle East lies in resolving the Palestinian issue by the principles established by international law.” Attaf stressed that “the history of this region, both ancient and modern, clearly shows that marginalizing or excluding this issue from the regional peace equation will only serve to heighten tensions and crises.”

It is important to note that Algeria holds the presidency of the Security Council for the month of January.
