UNSC: A3+ Affirms Commitment to a Political Process for Lasting Peace in Yemen

NEW YORK (United Nations), March 6, 2025 – The A3+ group at the UN Security Council (comprising Algeria, Somalia, and Sierra Leone, along with Guyana) reaffirmed its commitment on Thursday in New York to an inclusive political process aimed at establishing lasting peace in Yemen.

“The A3+ group continues to support the diplomatic efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to facilitate a political process led by and for the Yemeni people under the auspices of the UN, ultimately striving to achieve enduring peace in Yemen,” stated Michael Imran Kanu, the representative of Sierra Leone at the United Nations, during a speech delivered on behalf of the A3+ group at a Security Council meeting focused on Yemen.

He further emphasized that “the Security Council must remain steadfast in its support for an inclusive political process that addresses Yemen’s security and political challenges.”

In this regard, the group highlighted that “sustainable peace and stability are essential for establishing effective national governance systems and for revitalizing gas and oil production to enable exports and rejuvenate the Yemeni economy.”

The A3+ group expressed its “deep concern over the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure,” while underscoring “the importance of ongoing mediation efforts under the auspices of the UN.”

Furthermore, the A3+ group voiced “profound concern regarding the escalating food insecurity in Yemen, exacerbated by continued hostilities, economic decline, and climatic phenomena.”

“The humanitarian situation remains dire, with communities continuing to suffer from widespread damage and displacement caused by recent flooding,” Kanu warned.

In this context, he called for “continued support for the 2025 humanitarian response plan, which seeks to provide vital assistance to 19.5 million people, particularly women, girls, and children who are disproportionately affected by the conflict.”

Additionally, the A3+ group endorsed the appeals from organizations such as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Program (WFP), “urging states with influence and resources to support these efforts, including seeking innovative solutions to mitigate the risks faced by humanitarian workers due to targeted attacks.”

He indicated that “stability in the Middle East is at a critical juncture, especially considering the ongoing negotiations to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza and advance the peace process in Syria,” noting that these represent “two key elements.”
