United States: Wildfire Rapidly Spreads Near Los Angeles

A wildfire rapidly spread on Tuesday in Malibu, near Los Angeles, an area frequented by numerous celebrities. The fire is threatening structures and prompting evacuations, according to local authorities.

The blaze ignited on Monday evening and quickly advanced through the California city, consuming over 730 acres, as reported by the state agency Cal Fire.

Pepperdine University, located near the fire, announced the suspension of classes and exams on Tuesday.

Local media broadcast footage showing plumes of smoke and flames in front of a library where students had sought refuge while donning protective masks.

Local authorities are conducting “door-to-door” evacuations, as stated by the city of Malibu.

This coastal region is home to many Hollywood celebrities.

A significant portion of Southern California is under a red flag warning from the National Weather Service (NWS), with gusty winds and low humidity exacerbating fire risks.

After experiencing two relatively wet winters that provided some relief, California is facing a very active fire season this year. This summer, the state endured multiple heatwaves, a stark reminder of climate change.

In July and August, California experienced the fourth-largest wildfire in its history.
