UN Warns of Escalating Violence in Tripoli, Urges Immediate Ceasefire

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed deep concern on Tuesday over renewed clashes in the capital, Tripoli, warning that the fighting in densely populated neighborhoods is putting civilians in grave danger.

In a statement posted on X, the mission said it was “deeply alarmed” by the escalation of violence for the second consecutive night, particularly in the Salah al-Din and Abu Salim areas. It called for an “immediate, unconditional” ceasefire in all populated zones, cautioning that ongoing hostilities risk further destabilizing not only Tripoli but the country as a whole.

UNSMIL urged all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and to engage without delay in serious and good-faith dialogue to peacefully resolve their differences. It also offered its “good office” to help mediate and de-escalate the situation in order to restore stability.
