UN Security Council to Vote on Algeria-Backed Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire, Aid Access

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote today on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the urgent removal of all restrictions on humanitarian aid access. The resolution, spearheaded by Algeria in coordination with the ten non-permanent E10 member states, seeks to address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The draft resolution urges the unconditional and immediate lifting of restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza and demands its safe and unhindered distribution through the UN and its partners. It also calls for the restoration of essential humanitarian services in accordance with international humanitarian law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
Palestine’s Permanent Observer to the UN, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, underscored the Arab Group’s rejection of the continued paralysis of the Security Council. He insisted that the Council must act to halt Zionist aggression, expose those committing crimes against Palestinians, and ensure accountability.
Mansour also affirmed that the Zionist entity cannot dictate the future of the Middle East’s peoples, especially the Palestinians, who will decide their fate with the backing of the international community. Since October 7, 2023, Zionist aggression on Gaza has led to the deaths of over 54,510 civilians, primarily women and children, with more than 124,901 injured and at least 11,000 missing amid mass displacement.
