UN Security Council Holds Monthly Meeting on Yemen

The UN Security Council is holding its monthly briefing Monday on the situation in Yemen, followed by closed consultations. The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, are scheduled to deliver briefings, with further discussions to take place behind closed doors.
Fletcher is expected to expand on the worsening humanitarian crisis, highlighting the immense risks faced by civilians, including escalating food insecurity, economic collapse, and the lack of basic services. He is also likely to stress that budget cuts are directly undermining the UN’s and its partners’ ability to deliver life-saving aid, further aggravating the crisis.
The multitude of security threats weighing on Yemen, combined with the deepening humanitarian emergency and severe economic difficulties, has hindered progress in the intra-Yemeni political process. During the meeting, Grundberg and Council members are expected to emphasize the need for Yemeni parties to prioritize dialogue and return to diplomatic channels under UN auspices to establish a roadmap for peace. Several Council members are also set to reaffirm their support for the Special Envoy’s efforts to relaunch an inclusive intra-Yemeni political process aimed at achieving lasting peace in the country.
