UN Security Council Holds High-Level Briefing on Artificial Intelligence

The United Nations Security Council will hold a high-level briefing on artificial intelligence (AI) under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.” The session, chaired by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is one of the signature events during the US’ presidency of the Security Council for December.

The briefing will feature presentations from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, and Fei-Fei Li, Professor at Stanford University and Co-Director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute. The meeting will build on previous discussions within the Council regarding emerging technologies and efforts by member states to advance global dialogue on AI-related challenges.

The US concept note for the meeting raises several key questions for discussion, including how the international community can ensure the responsible development and use of AI, how AI can be governed to contribute to international peace and security while addressing digital divides, and what steps member states can take to mitigate the risks associated with AI, particularly in the military domain.
