UN Security Council Fails to Adopt Resolution Calling for Ceasefire in Gaza

The UN Security Council was unable to adopt a resolution on Wednesday that called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Drafted by the ten non-permanent member states of the Security Council, this resolution received 14 votes in favor, with no abstentions and one dissenting vote from the United States, which exercised its veto.

In addition to calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the resolution demanded the prompt and unconditional release of all hostages. It also stressed the necessity for a significant increase in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the protection of civilians and their property, and the implementation of international resolution 2735, which reaffirms that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) remains the cornerstone of the humanitarian response in Gaza.
