UN Secretary-General Warns of Climate Breakdown as 2024 Marks Record-High Temperatures

UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared late Monday that the last decade has witnessed the 10 hottest years on record, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change. “This is climate breakdown in real time,” Guterres stated on X, urging global leaders to act decisively.
Guterres called for countries to make drastic cuts in emissions and accelerate the transition to renewable energy by 2025 to put the world on a safer trajectory.
His remarks came amid alarming reports from Taiwan, where weather officials announced that the average annual temperature in 2024 had reached 24.97°C, the highest since records began in 1897, marking the hottest year in over a century.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration confirmed that this year’s soaring temperatures were part of a broader global trend, highlighting the ongoing climate crisis.
