UN Labels Slave Trade Gravest Crime Against Humanity

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared on Wednesday the African slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity, following an initiative by Ghana seeking redress and justice.
The resolution was adopted to applause, with 123 votes in favor, 3 against, and 52 abstentions, including the United Kingdom and EU member states.
Ghana had submitted a resolution to the UNGA for a vote designating slavery and the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime in human history,” calling for reparations from former colonial powers.
March 25th marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, established by the UN in 2007.
