UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Calls to End War in Sudan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, urged Sunday regional actors to take urgent action to end the war in Sudan, emphasizing that human rights must be at the heart of efforts to stop the fight and building lasting peace. Speaking in Nairobi after a five-day visit to Sudan, Turk said: “I saw the horrors of indescribable cruelty inflicted on the Sudanese people, yet also witnessed extraordinary human resilience and defiance.”

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights met with various segments of Sudanese society, including youth who organize and provide assistance to their communities, making them more vulnerable to the risk of arrest and violence.

Sudan’s infrastructure has faced repeated drone strikes by the Rapid Support Forces, including in recent weeks, attacks that constitute grave violations and potentially amount to war crimes.
