UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution Affirming Palestinians’ Right to Self-Determination

The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Issues) of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly has adopted its annual resolution recognizing the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and independence.

The resolution, adopted on Tuesday, reaffirmed what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said in its advisory opinion that the Zionist occupation is illegal and must end immediately, as it blocks the Palestinian people from exercising their right to self-determination and achieving state independence. 164 countries voted in favor.

This decision is especially significant as it comes amid ongoing attempts by the occupation to displace Palestinians, annex Palestinian lands, and strenghten its illegal control over occupied Palestinian territory, including East al-Quds and particularly the besieged Gaza Strip.

The resolution represents massive international rejection of these crimes and calls for international law to guide the examination of the Palestinian question in all its aspects, without discrimination or obstacles, as embodied in international court rulings.

The Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, quoted by Wafa news agency, emphasized Palestine’s commitment to strengthening international support for Palestinian rights, countering the Zionist entity’s attempts to end this international legal support in global bodies, until occupation ends.

The Palestinian diplomat also reaffirmed his commitment to halting the Zionist extermination war in Gaza, ensure continued aid delivery with adequate and effective distribution to save Palestinian civilian lives, and advance reconstruction efforts in the enclave.
