UN Deputy Spokesperson for Guterres: Dialogue Is the Best Path to De-escalate Middle East Conflict

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for António Guterres, emphasized the importance of dialogue with all parties involved in the conflict, describing it as the most effective way to achieve genuine and lasting de-escalation.

He noted that the United Nations is working clearly and directly to end the fighting and to reopen vital corridors, such as the Strait of Hormuz, given their strategic importance for regional and global stability.

In an interview with AL24 News, Haq stated that the United Nations welcomes all international initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict, highlighting efforts by Pakistan and Turkey in supporting mediation and encouraging peaceful solutions.

He also stressed that the United Nations Security Council remains the primary body responsible for maintaining international peace and security and addressing various crises. He expressed hope that the Council will fulfill its role during this sensitive period, noting that its effectiveness depends on the level of consensus among its members and their ability to take decisive decisions.

Regarding growing calls to reform the Security Council, Haq explained that any changes to its structure or working methods must follow specific procedures outlined in the UN Charter, emphasizing that such reforms ultimately depend on the will of member states.

He further highlighted the key role of the United Nations in implementing ceasefire agreements, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where the organization plays a central role in peacekeeping and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid, helping to alleviate the suffering of civilians.
