Ukraine’s NSDC Imposes Sanctions on Former President Poroshenko

KYIV – Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced Wednesday that the country’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) has imposed sanctions against him, a move he condemned as “unconstitutional and politically motivated.” In a video statement on X, Poroshenko accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of undermining national unity and warned of serious consequences.
The announcement followed Zelenskyy’s nightly address, in which he hinted at upcoming measures targeting individuals accused of compromising Ukraine’s security. “We are defending our state and restoring justice,” Zelenskyy stated. He emphasized that those who “undermined Ukraine’s national security and helped Russia” would be held accountable and that their assets would be frozen to support Ukraine’s defense efforts. The full details of the sanctions are expected to be published soon.
Poroshenko, who led Ukraine from 2014 to 2019, responded by criticizing Zelenskyy’s leadership, arguing that the decision was a direct attack on democracy. He accused the current administration of using national security as a pretext for political repression. As tensions escalate, Zelenskyy has yet to directly address Poroshenko’s allegations, leaving the political landscape in Ukraine more divided than ever.
