UK Data Watchdog Launches Investigation into TikTok Over Children’s Data Use

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced on Monday that it has launched an investigation into TikTok regarding its use of children’s data. The probe will focus on how the platform collects and processes personal information from users aged 13-17, particularly in making recommendations and delivering suggested content. The ICO cited concerns over social media platforms using data from children’s online activity, potentially exposing them to inappropriate or harmful content.

The investigation extends to other platforms, including Reddit and Imgur, to assess their handling of children’s personal data and age verification methods. UK Information Commissioner John Edwards emphasized that while the government welcomes technological innovation, companies must prioritize compliance with data protection laws. He warned that social media platforms operating in the UK must ensure children’s privacy is safeguarded
