UK Conference Urge Immediate Action to End Sudan Conflict, Respect Humanitarian Law

The African Union, European Union, United Kingdom, France, and Germany issued a joint call on Tuesday for urgent and decisive measures to resolve the ongoing conflict in Sudan. In a statement released after a high-level meeting in London, they called on all warring parties to immediately respect international humanitarian law and take concrete steps to alleviate civilian suffering.

The declaration came following the London Sudan Conference, co-hosted by the UK with the AU, EU, France, and Germany, to mark the second anniversary of the war that erupted in April 2023. The conference brought together foreign ministers and humanitarian leaders from countries including Canada, Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Norway, and the US. They reaffirmed their commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity while condemning foreign interference that worsens the conflict.

As Sudan’s civil war enters its third year, the signatories stressed the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the establishment of a civilian-led government determined by the Sudanese people. They expressed alarm over continued violence targeting humanitarian workers and urged unrestricted access for aid personnel and supplies. With over 130,000 estimated deaths and 15 million displaced, the conflict—primarily between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces—has become one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises
