Uganda : At least 18 dead after landfill site collapsed in Kampala

KAMPALA – A massive landfill site in the Ugandan capital has collapsed, killing at least 18 people, with another 14 injured, the Red Cross reported.
Irene Nakasiita, a spokeswoman for the Uganda Red Cross, indicated that the toll reached 18, yet she added that “the assessment is not yet completed,” as torrential rain impeded the rescuing process.
The Kiteezi landfill, which is the main waste disposal site for much of Kampala, collapsed due to heavy rainfall. The city authority noted “structural failure in waste mass,” while further details are still unclear. Regrettably, the site is inhabited by destitute citizens.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni ordered an investigation into the incident, saying, “Who allowed people to live near such a potentially hazardous and dangerous heap?”
