
ALGIERS – A Turkish sailor, member of the crew of an oil tanker flying the Maltese flag, was evacuated in emergency Tuesday evening by coastguard units of the Naval Forces Command, in the north of El Aouana, province of Jijel, the Algerian ministry of National Defence said Wednesday in a statement.
“As part of the humanitarian missions and efforts of coastguard units of the Naval Forces Command, relating to saving human lives at sea, and after the National Centre for Surveillance and Rescue Operations at Sea, of the National Coastguard Service of the Naval Forces Command, received on Tuesday, 3 June 2025 at 22:47 (local time), a request for emergency medical evacuation, about a sailor of Turkish nationality, member of the crew of an oil tanker flying the Maltese flag, coming from Libya, on its journey to Belgium, at 28 nautical miles north of El AouanaJijel,” the statement said.
“Immediately afterwards and in coordination with the Regional Centre for Surveillance and Rescue Operations at Sea in Jijel (5th Military Region), emergency medical evacuation was carried out through an AS-16 search and rescue helicopter, from the 560th search and rescue helicopter squadron.”
“The injured Turkish sailor was immediately evacuated to the airport of Tahir, Jijel, then taken by the Civil Protection officers to hospital of Tahir for the necessary treatment “.
The ministry of National Defence said “the operation is part of the humanitarian missions of the coastguard units of the Naval Forces Command, reflecting their efforts and ongoing commitment to saving lives at sea, whatever the circumstances.”
