Trump Threatens to Invoke Insurrection Act to Deploy Troops in Minnesota Over ICE Enforcement

US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned he may invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807—which permits federal deployment of soldiers and National Guard forces domestically—if Minnesota authorities do not allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to operate without interference. Trump issued the threat on his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing “corrupt politicians of Minnesota” of failing to enforce the law and of allowing “professional agitators and insurrectionists” to attack ICE personnel, saying he would “quickly put an end to the travesty” there if necessary.

In an earlier post, Trump noted that a judge declined to block ICE activity in the state, framing the decision as proof that federal agents could continue removing what he described as “violent and vicious criminals.” The warning comes amid an escalating federal immigration enforcement effort that has heightened tensions with local officials and residents.

The situation has intensified following recent violent incidents in Minneapolis, including a federal ICE officer shooting and wounding a man during an enforcement action and a separate fatal shooting last week that sparked widespread protests and political backlash. Demonstrations have erupted as local leaders demand transparency and participation in investigations into the deaths linked to immigration operations.

Trump has repeatedly deployed or sought National Guard units since his inauguration in January 2025, citing the need to combat urban crime, protect ICE facilities, and support law enforcement in several cities across the United States.
