Trump Signs Executive Order Banning Federal Support for Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday prohibiting federal funding for gender-affirming medical care for individuals under the age of 19. According to the White House, Trump stated that it is US policy not to fund, sponsor, or support what he referred to as the “transition” of children from one sex to another, calling such treatments “destructive and life-altering.”

The order directs federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, to end coverage for gender-affirming care under Medicaid, TRICARE, and other federal insurance programs. It also encourages the Justice Department to pursue legal action and draft legislation to oppose gender-affirming medical practices for minors.

This executive action follows Trump’s previous order last Monday titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” which mandates that the federal government recognize only two biological sexes—male and female—based on the determination made at conception.
