Trump Signals Willingness to Meet Xi Jinping on Final US-China Trade Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he is open to personally negotiating the final terms of a U.S.-China trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping, if necessary. Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump noted, “Yeah, I could see that. I mean, I’m not sure that it’ll be necessary, but that happened with the UK.”
Trump emphasized his longstanding “good relationship” with Xi and reiterated his respect for the Chinese leader. He described the potential opening of China’s market to American businesses as the most “exciting part” of the emerging deal. “Now it’s time for China to open up, and that’s part of our deal,” he said, calling the shift a chance to “open up a whole new world.”
His comments come after intensive trade talks between U.S. and Chinese officials concluded last weekend in Geneva, Switzerland. The negotiations resulted in a significant breakthrough, with both countries agreeing to sharply reduce tariffs for a 90-day period: the U.S. slashing its tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, and China cutting duties on American goods from 125% to 10%. Both sides described the outcome as “constructive,” marking a major step toward easing tensions after months of economic escalation.
