Trump Plans to Buy Greenland, Invasion Off the Table, Rubio Says

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told congressional lawmakers that President Donald Trump’s administration is not planning a military invasion of Greenland and instead aims to negotiate a purchase of the Arctic territory from Denmark, according to The Wall Street Journal. Rubio made the remarks during a classified briefing on U.S. foreign policy priorities, which also covered the recent operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He emphasized that aggressive rhetoric about Greenland should be understood as diplomatic leverage rather than a prelude to armed conflict.

Rubio’s clarification came after questions from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about whether the administration was contemplating military action in places beyond Venezuela, including Mexico and Greenland. Rubio sought to allay fears by asserting that the United States’ objective is to persuade Denmark to enter negotiations over the territory, not to seize it by force. However, other White House officials, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, have stated publicly that the administration is considering a range of options in pursuit of “acquiring” Greenland, and has not explicitly ruled out the use of military force.

The initiative reflects the administration’s view of Greenland’s strategic importance amid heightened geopolitical competition in the Arctic, particularly with Russia and China. Trump has repeatedly framed acquisition of the island as a national security priority. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have firmly rejected the idea that the territory is for sale and warned that any military action against a NATO ally could have severe consequences for the alliance. Most Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States, reinforcing the diplomatic challenges inherent in Trump’s proposal.
