US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday imposing a 25% tariff on goods imported into the US from any country that imports Venezuelan oil, either directly or through third parties, starting April 2. The order cites the “unusual and extraordinary threat” posed by Nicolas Maduro’s regime to US national security and foreign policy.
Earlier in the day, Trump also announced a “secondary” tariff on Venezuela, accusing Caracas of secretly sending gang members to the US. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced the stance, warning that any country or company involved in Venezuelan oil production or exports would face tariffs and sanctions. The US has long opposed Maduro’s government, alleging election fraud and corruption.
These measures mark a significant escalation in US pressure on Venezuela, signaling Washington’s intent to cut off Maduro’s economic lifelines. The move is expected to disrupt global oil trade and increase tensions between the US and nations that continue to engage with Venezuela’s energy sector.
