Trump Grants Elon Musk Authority Over Federal Job Cuts, Sparking Constitutional Concerns

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order granting Elon Musk’s unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) the power to direct federal agencies in cost-cutting measures. The order mandates agencies to coordinate with Musk’s team on workforce reductions, limiting hiring to essential positions.

Trump, speaking alongside Musk at the Oval Office, praised his role, despite criticism from legal experts who argue the move bypasses Congress’ constitutional control over federal spending.

The order aims to significantly downsize the 2.2 million-strong federal workforce, excluding sectors like national security, law enforcement, and immigration. Musk also announced an investigation into federal employees’ net worth, suggesting unexplained wealth could indicate fraud. Critics argue that such inquiries could violate constitutional protections against unlawful searches and seizures, as financial records require judicial authorization.

Public and congressional opposition has grown, with protests against Musk’s access to government databases, including sensitive information. Legal scholars warn the move may set a precedent for undermining congressional authority, while Trump continues to push for deeper administrative cuts under Musk’s oversight.
