Trump Escalates Demands for U.S. Control of Greenland Amid Firm Rejection by Territory and Allies

President Donald Trump has intensified calls for the United States to gain ownership of Greenland, asserting that anything short of American control is unacceptable for national security. Trump cited the need to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence in the strategically important Arctic region and from controlling critical shipping lanes.
Greenland’s leadership has firmly rejected the proposal. On Tuesday, the territory’s prime minister declared that Greenland does not wish to be owned, governed, or incorporated into the United States. Officials emphasized that their defense should remain under NATO’s purview, rejecting Trump’s criticism of Greenland’s military capabilities.
Despite the firm stance from Greenland and Denmark, U.S. congressional support is emerging. A congressman has introduced the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act, which would authorize the President to take whatever measures necessary to acquire the territory. European allies continue to back Greenland’s rejection, heightening tensions amid Trump’s repeated threats and the broader debate over Arctic influence and security.
