Trump Doubles Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Imports, Citing National Security

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, citing national security concerns, according to Newsweek.

The order states that the existing 25% tariff, while yielding some benefits, failed to sustain domestic production at a secure level. As a result, the higher tariffs will take effect at 12:01 a.m. local time on June 4.

The UK, which signed a trade agreement with the U.S. last month, will be temporarily exempt from the increase. Its exports will remain subject to the original 25% tariff, but the exemption is set for review after July 9.
