Trump Criticizes Biden’s Commutation of Death Sentences for 37 Inmates

Donald Trump criticized outgoing President Joe Biden on Tuesday for commuting the federal death sentences of 37 inmates, weeks before the White House transition.

On his platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Joe Biden just commuted the death sentences of 37 of the worst murderers in our country. When you learn what each of them has done, you won’t believe it.” He added, “This move makes no sense. Victims’ families and friends are in greater shock—they can’t believe what’s happening!”

Biden’s decision, described by human rights organizations as the largest mass commutation of death sentences by a U.S. president in modern history, was announced Monday. Activists had urged Biden to act before Trump’s anticipated return to the presidency on January 20, given Trump’s strong support for capital punishment.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to expand the death penalty to include immigrants convicted of killing U.S. citizens and individuals involved in drug and human trafficking.
