Trump Backs Lara Trump as Potential Successor to Sen. Tillis in North Carolina

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated the idea of his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as a potential Republican candidate to replace retiring Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, describing her as his “first choice” for the seat despite her current residence in Florida.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump praised Lara Trump’s North Carolina roots and familiarity with the state. “She grew up there… She’s a great person, Lara Trump,” he said. “That would always be my first choice, but she doesn’t live there now. But she’s there all the time, her parents are there. You know, she really knows North Carolina well.”

Lara Trump, married to the president’s son Eric Trump, has previously been involved in Republican fundraising and campaigning but has not held elected office. Trump’s endorsement could give her a significant boost if she chooses to run in 2026.

Trump also took the opportunity to comment on Senator Tillis’s departure, saying bluntly, “I didn’t get along with Tillis and he resigned. It’s good.” Tillis, who announced Sunday that he would not seek re-election, had broken with Trump over proposed cuts to health care programs in the president’s tax and spending plan — a move that reportedly angered the White House.

While other Republican contenders are expected to emerge, Trump suggested that a sitting congressman could also step up to compete for the seat, but reiterated, “Lara would be great.”
