Trump Announces Sweeping New Tariffs on Drugs, Trucks, Furniture

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled new import tariffs set to take effect October 1, targeting pharmaceuticals, heavy trucks and furniture, officials and media reported.

In a posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said a 100% tariff will apply to branded or patented pharmaceutical products unless the company is constructing a manufacturing plant in the United States.

He also announced 25% tariffs on heavy trucks made outside the U.S., stating that the move would support American truck manufacturers such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner and Mack Trucks.

On furniture and home goods, Trump said 50% tariffs will apply to kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and related products, while upholstered furniture will face a 30% tariff.

Trump defended the changes, citing “many reasons, but above all else … national security.”

These measures follow investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act concerning national security justifications for imposing tariffs on key sectors.

The reaction from global markets and foreign governments is evolving, with concerns about inflation, legal challenges, and impacts on healthcare and manufacturing.
