Trump Announces Arrangements for Venezuelan Oil Transfers to the United States

US President Donald Trump announced that the interim authorities in Venezuela will deliver between 30 and 50 million barrels of high-quality oil to the United States. He said the oil “will be sold at market price,” stressing that he will personally oversee “the funds generated from the sale to ensure they are used for the benefit of the Venezuelan people and the United States”.

Trump added that “storage vessels will transport Venezuelan oil directly to unloading terminals within the United States”.

In a related development, the New York Times reported that the US Department of Justice has retreated from its previous claim that the so-called “Cartel de los Soles” in Venezuela is a real criminal organization, a move that undermines one of the legal pillars previously relied upon by the administration of President Donald Trump in pursuing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
