Trump Announces 35% Tariff on Canadian Imports Starting August 1

U.S. President Donald Trump has informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that the United States will impose an additional 35% tariff on all Canadian imports starting August 1.

Trump made the announcement in a letter published Thursday on his Truth Social platform, stating: “Instead of cooperating with the United States, Canada responded with its own special tariffs. As of August 1, 2025, we will impose a 35% tariff on Canadian products entering the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs.”

He warned that the tariffs could be adjusted—either increased or decreased—depending on the relationship between the two countries.

The new tariff will be added to existing duties on key sectors such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles, which are among Canada’s top exports to its largest trading partner.

Trump has sent more than 20 similar letters to U.S. trade partners this week, informing them of upcoming tariff hikes.

Speaking to NBC News in a phone interview, Trump said he also plans to send a similar letter to the European Union “today or tomorrow.”

“I’d like to do it today,” Trump said. “I’m talking to the European Union, which as you know includes many countries, and also with Canada. We’re expected to send them [the letters] in the next few hours.”
