Three Dead, Four Missing After Migrant Boat Sinks off Western Turkey

Three people died and four were reported missing after a migrant boat sank on Thursday in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey, the Turkish coast guard said.

Thirty-eight passengers aboard the inflatable dinghy, which began taking on water before dawn off the district of Foca in western Turkey, north of the major city of Izmir, were rescued alive, the coast guard said in a statement.

The beaches of Foca district are located about 30 kilometres from the Greek island of Lesbos.

“Search and rescue operations are continuing to locate the four irregular migrants reported missing,” the coast guard said, adding that several vessels and helicopters had been deployed.
