The world faces many challenges that threaten peace and security (Bendjama)

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, urged members of the Security Council on Thursday to “work tirelessly” and “effectively” in addressing the threats to global peace and security.
During a ceremony to install the flags of the five newly elected non-permanent members of the Security Council at UN headquarters in New York, Bendjama emphasized the obligation of the council’s members to “uphold the virtues of multilateralism and to promote peace and security all around the world.”
“The world is facing many challenges that are threatening international peace and security,” he stated. He expressed particular concern about the situation in the Middle East, noting that significant security challenges also persist in other regions, including Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Bendjama welcomed the newly elected countries to the Security Council and praised those whose terms have recently concluded for their contributions during their tenure.
Pakistan, Somalia, Greece, Denmark, and Panama were elected by the UN General Assembly to serve on the Security Council for 2025-2026, succeeding Switzerland, Japan, Mozambique, Ecuador, and Malta. They will join five other members who are serving for the 2024-2025 term: Algeria, which is presiding over the Security Council this January, along with Guyana, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and South Korea.
Following the installation of the flags of the five new non-permanent members, the permanent representatives of the attending countries gathered for a group photo.
