Despite China’s Objections, Philippines Plans to Procure US-Made Typhon Missile

The Philippines is in the process of negotiating the procurement of the US-made Typhon Mid-Range Capability missile system to bolster its defense and protect its sovereignty within its exclusive economic zone, according to Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, the commanding general of the Philippine Army.

Galido confirmed that the Philippines sees the Typhon system as a feasible and adaptable solution to safeguard its territorial integrity. He noted that the acquisition process typically takes at least two years after budget approval by the Philippine Congress, but did not disclose the expected number of systems.

In April, the US deployed the Typhon missile system to the Philippines as part of joint military exercises. Reports in September indicated that the US had no plans to remove the system, despite China’s objections. Philippine officials later announced plans to train the country’s armed forces to operate the missile system.
