Thailand Strengthens Border Controls Amid Cholera Outbreak in Myanmar

Thailand has raised concerns over the recent cholera outbreak in neighboring Myanmar, prompting authorities to tighten monitoring and preventive measures along their shared border in Tak Province.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who also serves as Minister of Defense, emphasized the urgency of the situation in a press statement following a Defense Council meeting. “The Ministry is coordinating with the armed forces and the Public Health Ministry to implement stricter measures at the border,” he said.

As part of the response, the Thai military has been tasked with monitoring the situation, establishing checkpoints, and setting up quarantine zones along the border. These heightened measures will remain in place for at least a month to prevent the outbreak from spreading into Thailand.

Local authorities are also raising awareness among residents about the risks of cholera, distributing gloves and masks to promote hygiene. “All officials working at the border must wear masks,” Phumtham added, underscoring the importance of personal safety and sanitation.

The cholera outbreak in Myanmar has so far claimed two lives and infected over 300 people in Shwe Kokko, a town in Myawaddy District, Karen State, near the Tak border. Thailand’s proactive stance reflects its commitment to safeguarding public health while supporting regional efforts to combat the disease.
