Tanzania’s Ruling Party Secures Over 98% of Seats in Local Elections

Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has once again solidified its dominance in the country’s political landscape, winning more than 98% of the seats in the recent local elections. The results, announced on Thursday by Mohamed Mchengerwa, Minister of State in charge of elections, highlight the party’s continued stronghold on power.
“These elected officials should immediately take their oaths and begin serving the people in their constituencies,” Mchengerwa said, emphasizing the urgency for local leaders to start addressing community needs.
CCM has maintained its grip on Tanzanian politics for decades, often criticized for stifling opposition and limiting political pluralism. The overwhelming victory comes amid calls for more democratic reforms in the East African nation.
Observers note that the local elections serve as a precursor to the general elections, reflecting the political climate and public sentiment. However, opposition parties have raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.
As CCM continues to dominate, questions about the future of Tanzania’s political diversity remain.
