Summit of the Future 2024: UN member states adopt “Pact for the Future”

UN member states adopted on Sunday a “Pact for the Future,” that includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations, aiming to shape “a better future” for humanity in the face of wars, poverty, and climate change, according to media reports.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the idea of this “Summit for the Future” in 2021, describing it as a “unique opportunity” to change the course of human history.

In the lead-up to the UN General Assembly starting Tuesday, dozens of heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit on Sunday and Monday.

In the Pact, leaders pledge to strengthen the multilateral system “to keep pace with a changing world” and to “protect the needs and interests of current and future generations” threatened by “ongoing crises.”

The Pact outlines 56 “actions” across more than 20 pages, covering a broad range of themes including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, youth and future generations, as well as the transformation of global governance.
