Summit of the Future 2024: Algeria calls for restoring trust between the UN and World’s Peoples

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, called on Sunday evening in New York for the restoration of trust between the United Nations and the peoples of the world, particularly those suffering from colonisation and oppression.

Speaking during the 10th interactive dialogue on “Enhancing Multilateralism for International Peace and Security,” held as part of the “Summit of the Future,” FM Attaf stated that “Algeria calls for the restoration of the trust shaken between our international organisation and the world’s peoples, especially those colonised and oppressed who perceive the UN as their ultimate refuge against injustice and tyranny. They consider this organisation a beacon of hope in times of crisis and suffering, and a servant that delivers justice and protects their rights.”

He added, “We have many examples of crises, disputes, and conflicts presented before our international organisation in general and the Security Council in particular, which illustrate this tense, exceptional, and unprecedented situation.”

Mr. Attaf also emphasised that “one of the major challenges facing the international community today is to compel the Zionist occupation to cease its genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, which has been ongoing for nearly a year, and to end the multifaceted Zionist escalation in the Middle East.”

“In the face of this situation, what is expected from this Summit is that it rehabilitates the UN in its central role in conflict prevention and resolution,” he added, while expressing hope that “all member states that have signed the United Nations Charter reaffirm their commitment to comply with it and respect the rules of international law.”
