Sudan’s FM Declares War Nearing Its End Amid Military Advances

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf announced on Monday that the war is approaching its end, citing significant military gains against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital, Khartoum. Speaking in Cairo before foreign ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, Yusuf reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to the Jeddah Declaration as a prerequisite for any future negotiations with the RSF.

The declaration, backed by international humanitarian law, mandates both warring parties to ensure the facilitation of humanitarian aid for civilians caught in the conflict.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese military stated that it has successfully encircled the central region of Khartoum, tightening its control over the capital. Over the past days, the army has reported several victories against RSF forces across multiple states, signaling a shift in the battlefield dynamics.

Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, more than 20,000 people have been killed, with 14 million displaced, according to UN figures. However, independent research from US universities estimates the death toll at approximately 130,000.

Amid escalating international concern, the UN and humanitarian organizations continue to warn of an impending catastrophe, as millions of Sudanese face famine and severe food shortages.

The war has now engulfed 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. Calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities are growing, with urgent appeals for both sides to reach a political resolution before the situation deteriorates further.
