Sudan: WHO Launches Cholera Vaccination Campaign in Khartoum State

KHARTOUM – The World Health Organization (WHO) in Sudan has launched a cholera vaccination campaign in five localities of Khartoum State, targeting 1.1 million people, following the declaration of a deadly cholera outbreak.
In a post on its official social media accounts on Sunday, WHO announced: “A cholera vaccination campaign targeting 1.1M people commenced today in 5 localities of Khartoum State. Campaigns in May & June reached 2.24M people, helping to bring down cholera cases. WHO is providing operational & technical support to the campaign including monitoring.” The organization also highlighted that these efforts have contributed to reducing cholera infections in affected areas.
The UN agency reported that around 100,000 cholera cases have been recorded in Sudan since July 2024, warning of worsening malnutrition, mass displacement, and the spread of diseases in a country already ravaged by armed conflict. Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
