Sudan: RSF Targets Khartoum Airport Again with Drone Strikes

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday carried out a new wave of drone strikes on Khartoum International Airport for the third consecutive day, according to security sources cited by local media.

The same sources said seven drones targeted the airport and surrounding areas in the southern part of the capital, triggering widespread panic among residents. The RSF began launching attacks on Tuesday against the airport and other strategic sites in Khartoum, on the eve of the facility’s reopening after being closed for more than two years. The airport welcomed its first civilian flight on Wednesday.

Security sources said the RSF strikes did not cause major damage to the airport but described the recent attacks on the country’s most vital infrastructure as reflecting “a shift in the nature of the conflict” between the RSF and the Sudanese army — from ground fighting to the increasing use of drones as a tool of military and political pressure.

The Sudanese army and the RSF have been battling since April 2023, a conflict that has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million others, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
