Sudan: Increase in Cholera and Dengue Cases (Ministry of Health)

The Sudanese Ministry of Health reports a significant rise in cholera cases, now totaling 21,806, with 632 fatalities. Additionally, dengue fever cases have reached 1,329, resulting in four deaths. The ministry emphasizes the urgent need to enhance efforts to combat these epidemics.
According to the ministry’s report, eleven states have been impacted by the cholera outbreak. Kassala State, located in the east and experiencing the highest number of cholera cases, has initiated a comprehensive sanitation campaign to address the epidemic.
Mohamed Mustafa Mohamed, the health official in Kassala, attributed the worsening conditions to heavy rainfall and the ongoing influx of individuals fleeing violence from neighboring areas.
Simultaneously, the Sudanese Doctors Network has raised alarms about the daily increase in reported dengue cases at Kassala Hospital, underscoring the disease’s spread among displaced populations.
“We urgently call on international and regional organizations, as well as local authorities, to promptly tackle the outbreak at its source,” the network stated in their announcement.
The alarming surge in cholera and dengue cases is indicative of a broader public health crisis in Sudan, where clashes between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have persisted since April 2023. Other epidemic diseases, such as malaria and measles, have also been reported to be spreading across the country.
