Sudan: At Least 40 Killed in Attack in North Kordofan

An attack in the strategic city of El-Obeid, the regional capital of North Kordofan in Sudan, has left at least 40 people dead, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced Wednesday in a statement.
The United Nations did not specify the day of the attack nor who was responsible, but it took place as fighting intensifies for control of this central Sudanese region between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army.
More than 1,500 civilians were killed in October alone by the RSF, who are in conflict with the Sudanese army, according to figures released Monday by ACLED, an NGO that tracks conflict-related casualties around the world.
In total, since mid-April 2023, the NGO has recorded nearly 49,800 deaths in Sudan, including around 15,300 civilians. Half of these deaths occurred in the regions of North Darfur and Khartoum (approximately 14,000 and 11,200 respectively).
Since it began in April 2023, the conflict has also displaced millions of people and triggered the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations.
