Sudan Accuses RSF of Committing Genocide, Demands International Accountability at UN

Sudan delivered an urgent appeal to the international community on Tuesday, accusing the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of perpetrating genocide and insisting that global responses move beyond expressions of concern. Addressing a high-level UN General Assembly meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide, Minister Plenipotentiary Faisal Abdelazim Salim Mohamed described the situation as a “moment of profound national tragedy and deep international concern.”

Mohamed detailed the scale of atrocities committed in El-Fasher and other regions, including mass killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and the deliberate destruction of evidence. He stressed that the scope and intent of these acts “meet the legal definition of genocide.” The Sudanese representative emphasized that these crimes are well-documented and visible to the world, asserting that they “demand more than an expression of concern” and require real accountability for RSF forces responsible for the violence.

Sudan called for decisive international measures to protect civilians, including halting the flow of arms to the RSF, imposing targeted sanctions on individuals organizing or financing atrocities, and denying safe haven to those who glorify violence. Mohamed also urged stronger global cooperation to prevent weapons transfers to non-state armed groups. He warned that genocide represents not only a crime against its victims but also a fundamental test of the international system’s resolve. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has already killed thousands and displaced millions across the country.
