Spanish Political Alliance Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi People’s Right to Self-Determination

The Spanish political alliance comprising the United Left and the Green Party in the Murcia region has reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, stressing that the Sahrawi cause is a matter of human rights and international law, and announcing it was beginning a visit to the Sahrawi refugee camps on Sunday.
In a statement, the alliance said a delegation from its Murcia branch would travel today to the Sahrawi refugee camps in an initiative aimed at consolidating ties with the Sahrawi people and shedding light on their situation after five decades of occupation and forced exile.
Led by regional MP José Luis ?lvarez Castellanos, the visit forms part of a broader strategy of institutional, social and political support for the Sahrawi cause.
The move comes days after the registration of a parliamentary group named “Peace and Freedom for the Sahrawi People” in the regional assembly, an initiative spearheaded by the alliance and backed by both the People’s Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) , with the aim of reviving an institutional space that existed in previous legislative sessions.
The delegation also includes political figures and activists, among them Alfonso Lucas Munoz, Secretary-General of the Communist Party in Murcia, and Liliana Mellado, local coordinator of United Left in Murcia, alongside civil society representatives, solidarity activists and the Polisario Front’s representative in the region.
During their week-long stay in the camps, delegates are scheduled to meet with Sahrawi officials, social organizations and refugees, with the aim of providing support and strengthening cooperation.
The alliance stressed that the visit is not merely a symbolic gesture but an expression of genuine political commitment toward a people who have suffered decades of marginalization and rights violations, reaffirming the need to keep the Sahrawi cause at the forefront of political debate as a fundamental matter of human rights and international law.
The alliance further highlighted the strong solidarity network in the Murcia region with the Sahrawi people, through initiatives such as the “Holidays in Peace” programme, which supports Sahrawi children, and reiterated its commitment to continuing its support for the Sahrawi cause through all political, social and institutional means, in defence of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
